During the January to June period of this year, utilization of Singapore’s Changi Airport increased compared to the first six months of 2006. Airport traffic showed both increases in passenger traffic and improvements in the number of connections available.
Changi had 5.4% growth over the period, handling over 17.7 million passengers. They flew on 4,180 weekly flights by 79 airlines serving 185 cities in 59 countries. During the June school holiday period, more than 100,000 passengers passed through the airport on a nearly daily basis. Both March and June had traffic in excess of 3 million.
Five additional cities and two new countries are now served by flights from Changi. Udon Thani in Thailand, Tiruchirapally in India, Atlanta in the United States, Nairobi in Kenya and Budapest in Hungary have been added so far in 2007. Hungary and Kenya are the new countries now served from Changi.
Mr. Lim Kim Choon, Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore said, “Last year, Changi Airport handled a record 35.03 million passengers. With the steady growth of passengers through Changi Airport in the first six months this year, we look forward to setting new records for passenger traffic in 2007.” He added, “The new city links bear testament to Singapore’s growing connectivity and strengthening position as an air hub. Later this year, we also look forward to welcoming new carriers such as Etihad Airways to the Changi network.”
