Tourism - Once a booming industry in the 1970's in El Salvador before the civil conflict, is now in revival due to new era of peace, security and optimism. El Salvador boasts 300 km (200 miles) of Pristine Pacific Beaches, Coves, Bays and Mangroves, and proves to be an exotic destination for the Ecotourist or Adventure Traveller. We are proud of our indigenous past, most of which is still a mystery to us - a mystery that is being brought to light with recent discoveries, such as the ruins of Joya de Ceren, the "Pompeii of the Americas", a typical Maya village, preserved for posterity under a layer of volcanic ash. Adjacent are located the temples of San Andres, a Mayan religious site, while 25 miles to the west are located the pyramids of Tazumal, which include many intact artifacts of the period, on view in the museum.
