The 24-hour strike began at 9:00 p.m. (2000 GMT) Sunday.
State railway Trenitalia said a minimum service would be provided, especially for local trains during morning and evening rush hours. In a statement released early Monday, transport workers' union SULT said more than 90% of railway staffs were taking part in the strike.
Railway employees are demanding improved safety measures after a passenger train and freight train collided near the northern Italian city of Bologna on Jan. 7, killing 17 people, including five train workers.
